Back To School Makeup: My tips and tricks

Since school is almost starting/has already started, I figured I would do a makeup look for you showing two looks suitable for school.

Look I

For this first look, I decided to go light and fresh.
The key to looking awake and fresh is highlighting. In this look I used a shimmery champagne eye shadow all over the lid to bring some light to the eyes and also used an eye shadow a couple of shades lighter than my skin on the inner corners of my eyes to give me that "wide awake" look. By adding slightly darker shadows to the outer corners of the eyes, you give your face some shape, avoiding the "flat board" look.
I also used a brown gel pencil close to my upper and lower lash line, but only on the outer thirds of the eyes, smudging it into the other shadows.

With such a simple look in the eyes, you can use all sorts of lip products that you want, in any shade that you prefer. For this look, I chose an orange lip gloss by Catrice called Peach Boy. This is a fairly pigmented lip gloss, so I didn't use any lip liner or lipstick underneath.

If you use foundation everyday, make sure you contour your face and use some bronzer and blush to bring some life and color to your face.

Look II

I am very fond of this second look. It's the one I use almost every single day for school or when I'm in a rush.
The eye makeup is a "bolder" version of the one from the first look. The only thing I added was a cold brown matte eye shadow in the crease and some gel eyeliner, creating a wing. Something to help you look awake with a look similar to this is using a white/beige eyeliner pencil in the waterline.

This is, again, a neutral look, so you can choose any lip products you want to go with this look. I used a mix of brown, nude and red lipsticks to create this gorgeous old pink nude'ish color. The Lydia lip pencil by OCC is a darker version of this mixture I made and that was my initial inspiration.

I also like to have a strong full brow, so I just use either an eyebrow pencil or a matte eye shadow to fill them in just a tad and eyebrow gel to keep them in place all day long.

When it comes to lashes, I personally love when they have volume and length so I use a mascara that gives me both. You just have to search for what you like to see on yourself.

Some other tips and trick:

  • To make your eye makeup stay put all day, you can use a primer. There's a lot of eye primers available nowadays but one of the most famous ones is Urban Decay's Primer Potion, but you can just as well use a cream eye shadow or a creamy eye pencil like NYX Jumbo Pencils.

  • Since you're wearing makeup all day long, if you do use foundation and want it to stick with you for the whole day, you should use a primer as well. There are loads of facial primers out there but the best trick is to apply your favorite moisturizing cream.

  • To keep the look through the whole day, you may want to choose a lip product that is easy to reapply and doesn't need too much maintenance throughout the day. That is why I chose a pigmented gloss and a nude lipstick, they're easy to reapply and you can just take it with you in your bag.

This is it for this post. I hope you have enjoyed the looks and my personal choices.
I wish all of you the best of lucks for this school year.

Love,
Anna

  1. Anna, you really have a lot of great tips and tricks here. My sister is just starting up school again and this might give her some good ideas. It seems like for most girls this is something they consider a lot. Being able to have some tips and visual pictures of ideas to try seems like it would be very helpful to them. http://marca-college.com/programs/esthetics
